This is much more than a photo essay, with well researched and written text, supported by this unique treasure trove of images - Recommended. U 564 was a Type VIIc submarine, the most common variant to serve through WWII. Although it was an old design and obsolescent it was a proven model on which most of the U-Boat Aces served. Produced in quantity, it was also destroyed in quantity. The crews faced a terrible war of attrition as the Allied navies matched and then out- classed the submarines, moving from increasingly effective convoy escort to hunter/killer groups of antisubmarine warships with small carriers that embarked anti submarine aircraft. The text tells the story of U 564, and the images display the cramped conditions and the way of life on a war patrol. This is an absorbing story with the most memorable and unique collection of images filmed under patrol conditions.
