The story of Sparta has fascinated generations and the least well covered part of the story is the fall of Sparta - Highly Recommended British schools once taught both ancient history and ancient languages. Being able to read from original surviving text added to the experience but this was sadly replaced by other subjects. It is always difficult to plan a syllabus to adequately reflect all of the things that the young need to know but the study of ancient history and languages was very helpful to understanding life and providing a basis for scholarship. The author has to be commended for providing such a readable work of scholarship. The text is clear and easy to follow. The pace is good and carries the reader through what can in other hands be a tedious process. There is good insight, but there is also excitement and engagement with the reader. One of the most valuable books of ancient history that will hold the reader's attention to the end. There is also a very helpful colour plate section in support of the able text.
