This book looks at the rich military legacy of Manchester. – Highly Recommended Manchester is another British town with a military legacy going back to the Ancient Britons. For generations the sons of Manchester have joined the colours and during WWI they raised their own Pals Battalions where friends and workmates joined together to serve together. Manchester is a major British town with a long history of trade, linked to the sea by the Manchester Ship Canal. During two World Wars this made it a natural target for German bombers as supplies from North America and the Commonwealth arrived by sea. The author has provided a detailed description of the military legacy of Manchester. This includes one of its least edifying incidents, the Peterloo Massacre, were Corn Law demonstrator were charged by the cavalry, killing 18 and wounding more than 500 peaceful demonstrators. As with the other books in this excellent series, there are many illustrations, including some in full colour and some very rare images.
