This book provides a pictorial review of the SS Panzer Divisions deployed to the Eastern Front. Once again, a superb selection of rare images from wartime archives is supported by clear introductory text and captions – Very Highly Recommended. The Waffen-SS Divisions were tainted by the war crimes committed by its soldiers on both the Eastern Front and the Western Front, including crimes committed in Italy. The methods of selecting officers and men inevitably resulted in most being committed Nazis and prone to executing the Nazi philosophies on the battlefield. This was most marked on the Eastern Front and affected all Waffen SS Divisions including the SS Panzer Divisions. However, they were also fanatical soldiers who were prepared to accept heavy casualties in order to meet the Fuhrer's objectives. They displayed great courage and technical capability. Himmler worked to ensure that all of his Waffen SS Divisions were equipped with the best available equipment and they often received new models ahead of the Wehrmacht. This selection of images provides a very effective and balanced pictorial record of the SS Panzers in action on the Eastern Front, from the early good times through to the bitter fighting retreat before the Red Army. The armour, half-tracks, tanks and assault guns, is well illustrated and includes some images of Soviet T 26 and T34 tanks. There is also coverage of artillery, soft skinned vehicles, wheeled and half tracks, and field cars. The Kubelwagon is featured, but also the Schwimmwagen that was particularly popular on the Eastern Front with the many lakes and rivers that had to be crossed. The book begins with a clear and concise introduction to the three SS Panzer Divisions depicted. Through the main body of the book, text is confined to captions with some stunning images of war. This book is likely to prove very popular with enthusiasts and novices alike.
