The text is confined to a brief but informative introduction and to photo captions. The strength of the book is in the outstanding selection of images. The Waffen SS was intended by Himmler to eventually replace the German Army. It received priority for new weapons and became an elite force, especially on the Russian Front. The Waffen SS Divisions achieved many victories, but often at an unnecessarily high cost. This cost increased as the war continued because Hitler kept issuing orders to fight to hold territory that should have been conceded. This affected all German soldiers but the SS was generally more prepared to fanatically accept the order to fight to the last man. This new photo-essay graphically charts the rise and fall of the Waffen SS as it was forced into bloody retreat before the Red Army. It is essential reading for anyone with in interest in WWII and the role played by the SS.
