Pitkin Guides are printed in full colour throughout and contain a high photographic content blended with concise text. This book in the series contains some stunning photography and provides a very good synopsis of castles through Scotland, many accessible from water. There is a map showing the location of all the castles covered by the guide. Each castle is listed in alphabetic order with at least one photograph, combined with a brief history and description. Scotland has a great many more castles than those described by the guide, but of these additional buildings, many are no more than a mound and the outline of foundations. Those covered by the guide remain as substantial landmarks. Some are now heritage sites, but many are still in use today and can be visited.
