The Roman Legions were well-trained and equipped, to be deployed in large numbers and far from Rome. The large numbers of Roman soldiers gathered together on long campaign was frequently too great to depend on food and supplies they could loot as they advanced. This required the Legions to bring supplies up from the rear and the Roman armies had strict specifications for minimum standards of food.

The various generals may have differed widely in their ability to supply food that provided nutrition and a balanced diet. Caesar was one of the best generals in looking after the needs of his men. We know that primarily because although his troops complained about many things on campaign they never complained about the quality and quantity of their food supplies.

The authors have presented a fascinating account of how the Roman soldiers were supplied, what their diet consisted of, and how they cooked it. There is an interesting full colour photo plate section to support the very readable text.
