The authors have crafted a very readable guide, supported by a fine collection of images – Very Highly Recommended The growth of interest in visiting battlefields has developed rapidly from 1919. Today, the European battlefields of WWI and WWII are now supported by a large selection of guide books and the business of guided tours has grown equally quickly. On this base, tours of the more distant battlefields of two World Wars are becoming more numerous. This has created an appetite for visiting ancient battlefields but there are still few really well-researched guides, making this new book especially welcome. Guide books are much like boat plans and aircraft plans, many more are sold than result in readers following the guides to build something. This is no bad thing because not everyone can find the time or the money to follow the guide and visit the sites, although they may inspire others and they may eventually make that visit themselves. The guide books also generate interest in related books that provide more detailed coverage of weapons, tactics, politics, people, and associated topics. This guide is balanced and covers 20 important battles in ancient Greece, covering a period of 490 BC to 31 BC. There is an excellent introduction to provide a concise overview of warfare and tactics during the period and each battle is supported by fine images in the form of colour photographs and maps. Information is offered on travelling to the battlefields, exploring the terrain, and visiting sites and museums. In addition to providing the information necessary to making a visit to the ancient battlefields, this book is a very good introduction to the period for anyone interested in developing knowledge about the period and the battles that shaped the world.
