The FIRE Project has long published news releases from Zenith Aircraft and has followed some who have built and flown Zenith Aircraft designs. This new publication from Zenith Aircraft is an excellent introduction to their aircraft, the support they offer to builder/flyers and provides the background to the story of an aircraft company that brings flying to so many different types of people.
Chris Heintz founded the company in 1974 and several thousand of his designs and kits are flying in 48 different countries. All of the designs are for adventure flying and the exciting STOL models open bush flying to any adventurous pilot. With large floatation wheels, or amphibious floats, these aircraft can get into locations that others cannot. Those who have built their own models frequently contribute back to the home builder community with modifications that offer advantages to other pilots.
In Ghana, there is a medical mission that operates small aircraft to take health education and medical support to large areas without any formal roads. Many of their supporters are female and one young girl walked out of the bush to their airfield to take advantage of the training and experience the mission offers. She ended up learning to built a Zenith STOL aircraft and to fly it, a rare achievement for a female in rural Ghana. The mission also developed its own cargo container for dropping medical supplies to villages.
There is no typical age for starting to build and fly a Zenith aircraft. The young and the old, the commercial licensed pilot and the beginner are all represented in the Zenith community. Zenith supports this diverse community by holding open days and offering practical training in constructing from kits.
There is no single standard kit package. A would-be new owner can order a group of pre-manufactured modules as quick-build kits. This provides cost savings from self assembly, but offers a fast build option. At the other end of the options, it is possible to buy-as-you-build. Anyone who wants to save as much cost as possible and build at a very much slower rate can avoid having to store a complete kit that may be assembled slowly over many months, fitting it around a busy schedule. Between the two ends of the option range, there are kits of parts that can be delivered as a complete package that can be built in under 500 hrs. as a complete airframe, not including engine, instruments, paint or upholstery
The free pdf download provides a direct version of the hard copy, although the hard copy was supplied with additional materials. It is an easy to read document that provides much information. The only warning is that this could start a new passion, so make sure you have a suitable garage to build your own Zenith aircraft.
