This book provides the best available study of the highly successful Mi-8 Hip and its 17 and 171 export versions. – Very Highly Recommended. For those readers unfamiliar with Mushroom Model Publications, this is a publisher who specializes in books for the model engineer and model maker and topics with strong Polish connections. However it has also produced some excellent aviation histories and reviews of very important aircraft types that will satisfy the most demanding professional and enthusiast of aviation history and technology, without neglecting those readers primarily interested in model making. With most books conforming to an A4 format, there is the page space to provide some stunning full colour images and large scale line drawings. The level of image detail tends to be superior to many publications, that are primarily aimed at history enthusiasts, and the proportion of images very much higher. The Mi-8 Hip was designed as a multi-role military helicopter and became staple equipment for Soviet aviation and across the Eastern Block during the Cold War and the Afghan War. It has also proved a very successful export to China, the Middle East, Africa, Turkey and a growing list of users. The author has provided a very able review of the development and production of the variants of the basic design, the export history and the in-service operations. He has also brought the story up to date with the latest Mi-8AMTSh-VN variant. The large number of images include detailed shots of the cockpit and weapons systems, while the full colour side view sketches offer a number of subjects for model makers. For those as yet unfamiliar with the Yellow Series, the combination of very descriptive and comprehensive text, stunning colour photographs, crisp line drawings, full colour sketches and tables combines to produce not only the detail a modeller would require, but information that other readers would value but which is usually missing from other aviation history publications.
