DESCRIPTION:
A reissue of a book published originally in 1997. This compliments the 8th Air Force Bomber stories by the same author with photographs from the late Russ Zorn. The author has collected together a selection of stories that collectively paint a picture of the air war for American fighters pilots posted to England. Long range fighter escort of the USAAF bombers made possible daylight raids on European targets and joined the RAF night bombing campaign to place German targets under 24 hour bombardment shortening the war by several years and possibly winning it because it concluded hostilities before the Germans could field a range of jet and rocket powered aircraft and weapons in large numbers. The photographs that illustrate the account are first class and the author has taken some of the stories through to recent archaeological recovery of remains. The author has brought to life a series of events that cover the range of emotions. An excellent account of USAAF fighter experiences.
