The authors provide an authentic insight, as seen by the soldiers at the time. – Highly Recommended. This book provides a fascinating insiders' views of the epic combat between the two socialist regimes of Soviet Russia and Nazi Germany. A deep hatred developed in the opposing armies and the casualties were terrible, extending beyond battle, with less than 10% of German and Soviet prisoners surviving captivity to return home. Many German POWs continued as slave labour in the USSR until after the death of Stalin. Conditions on the battlefield were harsh in the extreme and accounted for casualties from the cold and from hunger on both sides but at a greater level on the German side. The authors have used previously unpublished extracts from a wide range of German documents and personal papers. This reinforces the accounts by other authors, but also introduces new depth and fresh insights, making this a book that holds the readers attention to the last page. The authors have covered combat and tactics, the organization and logistics and the morale and leadership, with their parts in conducting the role of the Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front.
