DESCRIPTION: A translation into English of a biography originally
published in German in 1983. Teddy Suhren was something of a rebel
and got away with it because he was a very effective U-Boat skipper –
Much Recommended.

Amongst U-Boat crews, Teddy Suhren is fondly remembered for his good
humour and leadership skills. He was frequently in trouble with the
higher authority, by nature a rebel. What allowed him to get away
with his rebellious streak, and move in the highest circles in
Germany, was his skill as a U-Boat skipper and the significant
tonnage he sunk.

His autobiography reads well, the humour and rebellious character
of Suhren showing through and the translation faithfully executed.

The U-Boat war was to see the crews suffer terrible casualties, even
in the 'good times' early in the war. Aces did not last very long,
many killed, or taken as POWs. Then there was the atmosphere
following WWII and the discoveries of the extent of the Nazi mass
genocide program. That has combined to make memoirs such as this
rare. The publisher deserves great credit for bringing an English
language version of the original book to the public.

Suhren's was a thrilling military career. He offers a fascinating
and rare insider's view of the workings of Hitler's navy. There are
many images through the body of the book and most are unique to this
autobiography. There are many fresh insights in what is a deeply
absorbing story.
