DESCRIPTION

This is a book that is a challenge for a reviewer. It is certainly a practical introduction and guide to the use of Kayaks on inland and open waters. There is all of the information needed to prepare for safe use of this type of craft. The basic and auxiliary equipments are described and illustrated and there is information on the types of kayak available. As a practical guide, this book cannot be faulted. It is comprehensive and covers the use of kayaks at sea, including the requirements for navigation on open water. Each of the tasks and actions is illustrated superbly with sequences of full colour photographs. The book cannot be too highly recommended to all those contemplating kayaking, starting out, or developing from simple short trips on benevolent inland waters to wild water and open sea navigation. The weather guide is well done and meets the needs of kayaking, as does the guide to recoveries and rescues. Then there is the information beyond a basic practical guide. There are some stunning photographs of scenery that may be viewed from a kayak. At the cover price, it is almost worth buying the book just for the land and seascapes and some readers may feel that these images completely justify acquiring a copy. Including these images is also a great idea for the primary readership of would be and new kayakers because it will inspire many to take their kayaking beyond the stage of short trips to real adventures. The authors have done a very good job, but the publisher is also to be commended for producing such a fine illustrated work that does full justice to some outstanding photography.
