DESCRIPTION

The author has served in the Parachute Regiment and held a senior position within NATO. He has written six books of military history and this title captures the memories of those who served in the military and civilians who lived through the 1939-1945 World War. The idea of capturing memories of survivors as the youngest reach their 80s and their numbers diminish is not new. An excellent book covering the 1914-1918 Great War is an early example and “Laddie” Lucas himself a former RAF fighter pilot captured the thoughts of comrades and former enemies of the air war during World War Two. By bringing together former enemies and allies sixty years or more after the events produces an evocative picture which expands by introducing the experiences of civilians. It is a story not just of what happened but of how it was perceived at the time and in reflection six decades on. A well-written and produced book adequately illustrated in black and white. A book to appeal to a wide readership and essential reading for all those interested in military history. Where some collections of survivors’ thoughts is primarily an editorial task of selecting accounts and slotting them into order, the author has contributed content to the collection making it a rounded account that flows well from beginning to end
