NASA Mission AS-508, Apollo 13, 1970 (including Saturn V, CM-109, SM-109, LM-7, Owners’ Workshop Manual

From the first books in this series, the publisher has produced a very effective format for covering iconic subjects. Within the broad series, a range of topics has been covered, sometimes a little quirky, but always packing a great deal of information into a small space and lavishly illustrating with full colour images. This latest addition to the series follows the now established and successful format.

By the time that Apollo 13 launched, the television channels and the American public were becoming bored with Apollo missions. That may have been natural after the first moon landing. Apollo 13 might have achieve poor coverage had it not been for a major emergency after a LOX tank malfunction and the heroic efforts to bring the crippled spacecraft back safely with a live crew.

DESCRIPTION: From the first books in this series, the publisher has produced a very effective format for covering iconic subjects.

Apollo 13 might have achieved poor coverage had it not been for a major emergency after a LOX tank malfunction and the heroic efforts to bring the crippled spacecraft back safely with a live crew.

This manual tells the story of how the lunar lander was turned into a lifeboat to get the crew back to earth orbit, before returning to the command module for re-entry. However, it does much more than that by providing an introduction to the Apollo program and then providing detailed drawings and description of each of the elements that comprised the Apollo spacecraft and its lunar lander.

NASA has published a great deal of material over the years and much of that is also available on the family of information portals maintained on the Internet by NASA, but much of the detailed information on the Apollo program and equipment is contained in technical books that require some knowledge of space science and a desire to purchase a series of relatively costly volumes. This new Haynes manual provides a very affordable information source for readers who do not have a professional interest in space exploration.

The author and publisher have made some modifications to information released previously by NASA. Notably this includes the conversion of nautical miles to statute miles. Most readers will be more familiar with the Statute Mile measurement, in the system of Imperial Measures, than the longer nautical mile used by NASA in expressing space distances.

Some technical drawings and annotation has also been simplified and this makes the manual much easier to read and understand by readers who are not professionals in the aerospace and defence community. The book is first class and should be widely read to improve public appreciation of what is now a rapidly expanding area of exploration.

Newspapers and broadcasters still provide poor coverage of the space community. Anyone who receives a daily flow of news releases for NASA and space agencies in other countries, together with the expanding commercial space industry will have an appreciation of just how important space technology is becoming and how fast the industry and community is expanding. Any book that explains the challenges and benefits of the space industry is to be commended and this book certainly explains one of the important early journeys through near space.
