DESCRIPTION: This is an addition to a series of books that each cover the military
legacy of British towns and cities. This book looks at the rich military legacy of
York. – Highly Recommended

York is another British town with a military legacy going back to the Ancient Britons.
It is however unique in being a focal point for invasions of varying types and
becoming the Viking Capital of Jorvik. It has been fought over many times through
the centuries and was the Southern point of the annual tax rides during the Medieval
period when Scots tax collectors rode down from Berwick collecting whitemail, in
the form of coins church plate and jewels for the Scottish Exchequer, before riding
West to the western coast and returning back to Scotland collecting blackmail, in the
form of sheep and cattle, as payment for the tax collectors

For generations the sons of York have joined the colours. Its geographic position
meant that it was also surrounded by airfields during two World Wars and host to
the Army

The author has provided a fascinating description of the military legacy of York. As
with the other books in this excellent series, there are many illustrations, including
some in full colour and some very rare images.
