The history of Ancient Greece has received good coverage of land battles but much less coverage of the naval battles that often determined the outcome of fighting on land. - Very Highly Recommended As ancient Greek and Latin are rarely taught now at school, histories from the period in modern languages are specially welcome. This is particularly true of naval warfare from ancient history. This new book is well-researched and nicely written, concentrating on thirteen great naval battles of Ancient Greece. The Greeks developed some innovative technologies and tactics to enable them to fight the massive Persian fleets that were necessary to enable the Persians to land large forces and engage Greek armies. As a result, the major naval battles frequently determined the outcome of land battles by cutting enemy lines of communication or destroying the Persian ability to land and support overwhelming forces ashore. The author displays his passion for his subject and his easy to read text covers each battle in context, to provide the reader with an understanding of how and when the battle was to be fought, in addition to the conduct of the conflict. There are good clear maps to illustrate the important points.
