In the early 1920s, the Treaty of Versailles was relaxed to enable Germany to build small numbers of armoured cars for use in policing. They were soon employed, initially covertly, in training the new Wehrmacht as the German rearmament program got underway to be unveiled in the 1930s, when the Sd.Kfz.13 series became available.
Historians tend to focus on tracked armour, but the humble 4-wheeled armoured car served in significant numbers in a training and reconnaissance role. They were also employed widely in occupied territories to to police lines of communications and to escort vehicle convoys. They were frequently used also to support counter-insurgency troops.
The excellent selection of images from the period provided great photographic detail and covers the many uses of these vehicles.
