DESCRIPTION: This is basically a fun book. The author describes how to build a very low cost off-road vehicle that is not intended to comply with any regulations for road use or to meet specifications for track and off-road competition. There is a requirement to have access to suitable land where the buggy can be driven legally. The construction is a first class place for the young to begin some serious engineering experience under supervision. The steel tube frame does require welding skills but a supervised novice can easily undertake the tube cutting, joint shaping, and welding required to build the chassis which includes a very solid roll bar. There is no complex suspension and this means a hard rise in the finished vehicle over rough ground. The wheels and tyres can be sourced from a breaker’s yard or purchase as new items. To build within the target price, the constructor will have to use components from a scrap yard. If the target price is not important, new components can be easily sourced and purchased. If speed of construction is an objective, the designs for chassis and a small number of specially fabricated parts can be ordered from an engineering company at added cost, but then requiring very simple assembly by bolting the components together. When the vehicle is complete, painted to taste and suitable private land found to drive over, the vehicle will provide an exciting experience, handling rough ground and giving the same thrills as a go-kart because the driver sits low to the ground and speed feels faster than it really is. An informative book that is easy to follow with good illustration and sage advice that makes vehicle handling available safely to a new generation of the young and young at heart.
