The team gathering together this remarkable essay to Rodchenko has presented an enthralling testament, much recommended. The Russian photographer is not well-know outside the photo-art community and this new book goes a long way to correcting the omission. The publishers have produced an art quality book at an aggressive price that will place it within reach of a large readership. It is assured of a strong following from artists, professional photographers and graphic designers, but will appeal to anyone interested in the important topics covered by Rodchenko's work and the insight it provides into life of creative and innovative people within the Soviet Union. The nature of the Soviet Union was not conducive to artists unless they could be harnessed to the propaganda needs. That did not automatically strangle creativity and innovation in the arts and Rodchenko was part of the relatively small number of creative individuals who broke new ground but still managed to survive in a State that was heavily structured and ruled by a small group of privileged politicians. The books begins with a number of editorial contributions, including comment from Rodchenko's daughter. This text provides a very able introduction to Rodchenko and explains his work and its importance, both in Russian history, and to the wider world. The graphic content requires little by way of captioning and is a powerful presentation of a creative mind that has built on a technical command of photographic media to produce true art. This also provides some rare glimpses into the components of Russia under Soviet control. A book to enjoy and be inspired by.
