Writing Your Family History, a Guide for Family Historians

B2131

Unearthing family history has always been a popular activity and it is only natural to want to know where you came from. Very few families pass down a comprehensive history to future generations, and a written history is even more rare. That means that for many, going back more than a few generations will require real work. It would therefore be a great shame if hard work is not to produce a written account of what has been uncovered. Some will wish to go further and write a book that is published and becomes available to a wide readership. Today, that is relatively easy because personal computing has enabled novice writers to produce creditable books and either self-publish them, or find a publisher/distributor. What is more challenging is to learn how to achieve this. This book provides that knowledge in a very readable style and format. This makes it a first class starting point for novice researchers and writers. It provides exercises and examples that provide a logical progression through he necessary tasks.

The book is well illustrated and is educational but also entertaining.

Belisarius, The Last Roman General

B2129

The publisher has established a reputation for correcting the neglect of historic subjects and this excellent addition to the list of Ancient History military titles is a very worthy addition. Belisarius was chosen by Justinian I, Eastern Roman Emperor, to attempt the reconquest of the lost provinces of the West and the reconquest of Africa. The author has provided a very easy to read account of a Roman General, who deserves to be recognized, and, at the same time, looked at the political situation, the Byzantine Army and the military technology deployed. There are many maps and charts through the body of the book and a fascinating photo plate section. This book will be eagerly acquired by all those interested in Ancient History, but it also provides a unique bridge between the Fall of Rome and Eastern Roman Empire that kept the flame of Roman achievmeent burning until the turmoil of the Crusades.

Ferries Across the Humber, The story of the Humber Ferries and the last coal-burning paddle steamers in regular service in Britain.

B2128

The history of the Humber ferries may be unique, but they form an excellent example of the effectiveness of paddle steamers in providing ferry services across rivers and estuaries. The book also includes an account of the diesel paddle vessel Farringford that saw out the service in 1981 and other vessels associated with the Hull to New Holland ferry.

Warriors on Horseback, The Inside Story of the Professional Jockey

B2127

This is a very interesting look at the professional jockey and the fiercely competitive sport of horse racing. The title is also interesting in that it refers to the modern equestrian competition but also highlights the origins of the sport. As with many sports, it dates back into ancient history when ‘games’ were rallies of warriors who were demonstrating their abilities that were deployed on the field of battle. A group of warriors could demonstrate their superiority and convince others that they could not be resisted, so avoiding an actual armed conflict. There are many images through the body of the book and a full colour photo plate section. A must for all those followers of racing, but a great read that will hold the attention of a wider readership.

The publisher is establishing a reputation for bringing to print flying stories that inspire and deliver fresh insights. During WWII, Britain received strong support from young men across the Empire. They volunteered to come from across the globe to fight high in the skies above Europe, participating in the greatest air battles ever fought. ‘Artie’ Ashworth was to fly bombers before being posted to the Far East where he flew Corsair fighters and then continued in peacetime service, flying a wide selection of aircraft types. This is a unique book that includes reproductions of flying logs and is an absorbing read. Highly recommended!
