With Hitler to the End

B1841

As Hitler’s valet to the very end, Linge did have a unique experience. What motivated the memoirs is almost irrelevant. The reader may feel that there are elements of self-justification, ego, regret and excuse. In many photographs of Hitler, Linge is a figure in the background dressed in an SS uniform. As a valet, he had a close personal experience of Hitler but was not in a position to influence Hitler in any significant way. However, he was often close to Hitler and his visitors, able to overhear what transpired in the meeting and like any servant treated as though he did not exist.

Medieval Warefare, Military History from Primary Sources

B1840

Illustrated in monochrone by drawings of tools and weapons of the period, the book paints a vivid picture that took body armour and weapons to their pre-firearm heights. The picture most familiar for the period is the Moate and Baillie castle with its massive curtain walls, towers, gatehouse and keep, usually surrounded by a water-filled ditch or located on an island in a lake. The reality for much of the period was different. The wooden fort and the peel were more common. The Normans arrived in English shores with prefabricated wooden forts, but then began to build castles in stone as centres of administration, prisons and refuges form passing armed bands.

An Alternative History of Britain, The Wars of the Roses

B1839

The author is building a series of interesting alternative histories. This new book is again interesting and plausible. It covers a period of English history that is often viewed romantically, even though it was a particularly violent and brutal civil war that raged on for much of the 15th Century.

A fascinating review of the Wars of the Roses that is informative, enjoyable and entertaining.

Secret Flotillas, Clandestine Sea Operations To Brittany 1940-1944, Vol 1

B1838

The operations to Brittany were of immense value to the Allied cause. While Britain stood alone against Germany, the frequent sailings to the enemy coast were a constant reminder to Germany that British forces would again land in Europe to liberate the occupied countries and that even alone, Britain was capable of striking back. A variety of British and French fishing boats were used in these operations, as were the seventy foot MTB and MGB fast attack craft, but many operations employed the much larger Fairmile A, B and D boats that were very heavily armed for their size and could be considered scaled down destroyers built in wood. Even by 1944, when these operations had been continuing for more than four years, the Germans still had only the most limited success in intercepting missions. For much of this time, the British clandestine sailings were of such frequency and regularity that they were like a marine bus service, taking covert operatives and weapons to and from occupied Brittany and exfiltrating agents, resistance fighters, evaders and POW escapees.

Tracking Down Steam, BR Steam in Action and on Shed, in Works, Industry and Preservation, and Awaiting Scrap

B1837

With its roots in transport, the publication of books on steam trains is a natural topic for the publisher. This delightful book may be a MUST for every train enthusiast, but it will also appeal to readers with a much wider set of interests. It inevitably provides aspects of social history and it records the final years of the story of British steam engines.

The author is an acknowledged specialist on the subject, starting as a train spotter and developing a passion for trains of all types. For more than ten years he ran the Oxford Publishing Company, a Haynes imprint, and today retains his links with Haynes as a consultant on railway publishing.

McLaren M23, 1973 onwards (all marks), Owners’ Workshop Manual

B1836

This manual is not a practical engineering guide to maintaining a McLaren M23 in competition, but provides an excellent overview of this important and iconic F1 racing car. The book is heavily illustrated, mainly with full colour photographs and benefits from the publishers long and specialist experience of producing workshop manuals.

This is a book that will appeal to all F-1 enthusiasts, drivers, mechanics and aspirants. The text is very good and insightful, but what really marks the book out are the excellent photographs, many rare or used for the first time in a publication. It is also a good introduction to Formula One for the many who follow the race season on television and those developing an interest for the sport of motor racing.

Warship 2013

B1835

This edition of the popular warship annual again features ten contributors, two of whom are new to the annual. The contributors are all well-established specialists in their individual fields and provide authoritative commentaries. Colour illustration is restricted to the dust cover which may seem dated for a serious 21st Century annual, but then many of the subjects covered were never shot in colour and it can be argued that monochrone illustration throughout provides continuity.

Shipwright 2013

B1834

Regular readers will need no introduction because Shipwright established its format and high definition a long time ago. This level of quality is not easy to maintain but the publisher continues to achieve the standard. For the aspirant readers, this annual is based on a large number of very crisp full colour photographs that very ably illustrate the text. It serves the model maker and the model engineer who will be working in the field of nautical models.
