Pitkin Guide Cutty Sark

B1466

Pitkin Guides are printed in full colour throughout and contain a high photographic content blended with concise text. The Cutty Sark is a prime London tourist site, the tea clipper displayed in a dry dock at Greenwich. A two million pound restoration programme started in 1992. Everything that could be removed was taken from the ship and placed in storage while the work began on restoring the hull and decks. Sadly fire broke out and almost destroyed the vessel. Fortunately the basis of a complete restoration existed, aided by the fact that many artefacts were safely stored away from the fire. This guide was first published in 1994 in the early stages of the original restoration and the last reprint was published before the fire. However, this is an interesting and informative guide that provides a brief history of the tea trade and this tea clipper, her acquisition for preservation and the work which went into making her a much loved tourist attraction.

Pitkin City Guide Norwich

B1465

Pitkin Guides are printed in full colour throughout and contain a high photographic content blended with concise text. NPL publish a number of guides and books that cover Norwich, its famous Cathedral and the area around the City. This guide provides a very handy and low cost overview, providing suggestions for walks, a brief history of what was once the second City of England and is still a large and important conurbation. Norwich was once an important inland port and its wealth came originally from the wool trade. The result is a City with a rich Medieval history and surviving architecture, to which following generations have added important new buildings, including the recent Forum that replaced the City Library destroyed by fire and now houses BBC regional television and radio, a new library and a selection of community activities. In addition to some outstanding colour photographs illustrating the range of interest, the guide includes a street map of the old city within the surviving City walls. The guide has everything a tourist or visitor might need in condensed form, providing a good starting point for anyone wishing to learn more about Norwich.

Titanic and the Californian

B1464

Through history there are a number of events that capture the imagination of generations. Sometimes it is difficult to understand what made a particular event so durable in public memory, generating a large number of books on every conceivable aspect of the event and every theory and belief. The story of the sinking of the Titanic is one such event. Now almost a century has passed since this great liner met tragedy and sank with loss of life in the cold waters of the North Atlantic. At the time of the sinking public interest was naturally very strong. This ship had been described as unsinkable and yet she sank. She was described as a luxury liner although she included a large number of immigrants crammed into very basic accommodation. She carried all the safety aids of the time including wireless. She sank after striking an iceberg and that was unusual. However, that initial and natural interest has been maintained through the generations and become if anything stronger and more international. The discovery of the wreck by deep diving submarines added new dimensions to the story but the publication of yet more books would have been inevitable without that discovery. What has kept the story alive is the mixture of fact, theory and belief. In this new book, the author has introduced new material and has taken a journalist’s approach to one aspect of the event.
