Wiley Nautical Weather Service

B1463 B1463a

Wiley is already a well-established and respected publisher of technical, educational, and guide, books and manuals. They are now establishing a new line of electronic publications, drawing on the huge information base already established by their paper-based publications. The new service begins as a weather forecasting service that is available via the Internet for home computers and laptop computers at no charge. The necessary client software is also available free of charge. The same range of service is available to mobile phone users at a small charge in three pricing options and is compatible with some 80% of the mobile phones available today. Those requiring frequent forecasts are able to take out subscriptions. Those who require frequent forecasts through a short period have the option of paying for pre-paid bundles. Occasional users have the option of one-off charges. The review was conducted using the first Press Issue of the service with information and access facilities contained in a CD ROM.

The Admiral’s daughter

B1462

The author has developed a series of books around two principle characters, Kydd and Renzi, using an original basic theme of two men who come from different social backgrounds but meet as seamen in the harsh life of Nelson’s Navy. Renzi comes from a background of wealth but volunteers to be a seaman for unusual personal reasons. Kydd is from a poor background and is press ganged. Against the odds, they both become officers on merit. Over seven novels, Stockwin has developed the characters and their stories through a series of highs and lows as they struggle forward. With each book we have seen a little more of the two characters and been introduced to a wealth of new characters in tales that combine joy and sorrow, success and failure. Each year the author has travelled to a different location to research for the next book in the series. Thus far we have seen Kydd travel around the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, North America and the South Seas. Each tale has the feel of being contemporary with the period in which it has been set and authentic in its location. Each book has entertained and educated. Now we have reached book number eight and it fully lives up to the readers’ expectations developed by the previous stories. This time, Kydd has returned to England, seas with which he is not familiar.

The Hurricane Story

B1461

This is a volume in the Sutton ‘story’ series of pocket books that offer very good value for money. It follows the format established so successfully by the first books in the series. Colour is used throughout. Extended captions and side bar notes compliment the text in what is a lavishly illustrated book. The text is authoritative and concise, creating a work which is easy to read for a young reader establishing an interest in the subject covered, but of a competency that a professional or serious enthusiast would still find it of value. An amazing amount of detail is packed into the pages and there is everything that you might wish to know about the subject. The Hawker Hurricane was both the first heavy gun monoplane fighter to enter RAF service mounting a massive armament of eight rifle calibre machine guns at a time when most other fighters mounted two or four similar guns.

Tars

B1460

The author has already written on the Napoleonic Wars, a period of naval history that has been heavily covered in fiction and in history. In this book he covers the period of the 7 Years War between France and Britain. This period has received very little coverage even though it was the first global conflict and marked the point when Britain emerged as the first global super power in history. The Royal Navy was the means of projecting power at will around the world and Britain was so far in advance of rival nations in the exercise of naval power that she was able to crush their navies. Isolated by the Channel from mainland Europe, Britain was protected from invasion and able to chose the time and place of land battles. What makes this book so enjoyable is that it follows the lives and battles of a group of sailors who served on the Dragon and the Monmouth. Uncovered first-person sources have resulted in an account which is both an authoritative historical presentation of events, and an engaging human story that could be a novel in its power to paint pictures in words. The publisher has inserted a number of colour plate sections, reproducing paintings of people and events, and also included a large number of bandw images through the body of the text, using engravings, sketches, charts and maps. In all it is a very worthwhile book that is easy to read but hard to put down, covering a period of history which has been seriously neglected in the past,

West Aegean Cruising Companion

B1458

The first of two ‘new look’ Cruising Companions to be published by Wiley Nautical since the acquisition of the series in June 07. Although the publisher is aiming at sailors, this is a comprehensive and enjoyable guide to the West Aegean. An A4-sized volume that is surprisingly heavy, this book is very good value and affordable as a general interest book. The author has done a very good job of collecting together all of the information that a sailor cruising in the waters would need for a productive and enjoyable voyage. There is lavish illustration and the use of colour throughout makes this a very attractive work. Anchorages and ports are covered in detail with map coordinates.

Ionian Cruising Companion

B1459

There are notes on the history of ancient Greece and a wealth of detail covering shops, restaurants and places to visit. Given the relatively low price of this excellent book, and the probability that the publisher will be reprinting regularly, many readers may buy a copy now and then purchase a revised copy for later cruises, but the publisher offers a free update service.

Mainsail Trimming

B1448

Wiley Nautical carry a title list of practical guides and educational books. This new practical instruction is well up to their established standard and features colour throughout, with copious illustration using drawings, sketches and photographs. A great many sailors never really learn how to trim their sails. Some, like this reviewer, will start sailing at a young age and without formal instruction, learning by experience and suiting their sailing to the conditions and opportunities that they have available to them. Even small dinghies have benefited from the development of new technologies and now have a full range of controls that can be used to squeeze extra performance form their craft. This sophistication makes the learning process potentially much more difficult. Felix Marks has taken an interesting and effective approach by ruthlessly concentrating on the mainsail to the exclusion of other sails and unrelated rigging. The result is a very easy to follow review of the principles of mainsail design, manufacture and use.
