Diesels Afloat

B1446

This book is part of the fernhurst Essential Boat series, following that established format with good illustration and the use of colour throughout. Pat Manley is the resident guru for Practical boat owner magazine. He teaches courses on diesel engines , VHF and radar. The author deals comprehensively with the subject, looking at the fuel systems, cooling systems, electrics and propulsion systems, in addition to the mechanics of the diesel engine. There is a wealth of practical advice on the operation, maintenance, winterisation, restoration of marine diesels, together with a review of the skills and tools required to correctly work on this ubiquitous marine power plant. Many calls for help at sea relate to engine failures or problems with associated equipment. The troubleshooting guide will enable a sailor to deal with many of the problems that would otherwise develop into an emergency.

Essential Boat Electrics

B1445

This book is part of the fernhurst Essential Boat series, following that established format with good illustration and the use of colour throughout. Pat Manley has tested electrical devices for Practical boat owner magazine and has an extensive practical knowledge of marine electrical equipment. Electrics are one of life’s mysteries to many sailors and there continues to be a belief that water and electricity do not mix. The author has done a good job of dispelling the myths and provided a very simple to follow guide to the basic skills and tools required to correctly install, maintain and troubleshoot electrical equipment afloat. Equally valuable is his review of solar panels and batteries as part of the task of choosing the most suitable products. The high quality of colour illustration greatly helps to present a potentially technical subject in an easy to understand manner. An invaluable guide for all sailors.

Racing, A Beginner’s Guide

B1444

This book is part of the fernhurst Beginner’s Guide series, following that established format with good illustration and the use of colour throughout. The only word of caution is that ‘Beginner’s Guide’ Is not for total beginners in sailing. The authors assume that the sailor has already acquired basic skill in sailing dinghies and is competent at that level, but wishing to move from casual sailing for pleasure to serious competition. John Caig is a twice Fireball World Champion and Tim Davison has been Laser (Masters) European Champion and UK National Champion. The authors have put across their experience, offering approaches that they know work and which can be replicated. The full colour drawings and photographs help to make this a very effective guide.

Skipper’s practical handbook

B1443

This book is part of the fernhurst Practical Handbook series, following that established format with good illustration and the use of colour throughout. It is essential reading for anyone working towards Day Skipper qualifications, but it is also important for those intending to crew a boat, who in a small boat may have to take over as skipper. The book begins with the Safety Checklist and the Skippering Style. It then works through all of the typical manoeuvres under power and under sail, concluding with a very effective digest of navigation and passage planning. As a single volume, the book provides an excellent primer to those starting out as seamen and aspiring to become skippers, however, it assumes that the theoretical skills have been acquired and that these skills are now being turned into practical experience. It also makes the assumption that the crew is competent and recognizes that there are often several ways of achieving the required objective. The author has put across his experience as an instructor, offering approaches that he knows work and which can be replicated. Since fernhurst has been acquired by John Wiley and Sons Limited, the new management has continued all of the popular practical maritime guides and reference books in the established and accepted fernhurst series groups. Wiley is also celebrating its bicentennial in 2007, adding the ferhurst imprint to a very successful family of practical, educational and business publications.

Power Boating, Companion

B1440

This rapid guide covers all of the key aspects of power boating. To pack so much information into such a small booklet, and still make the information clear and easy to read, is a real achievement. A high standard of illustration and the use of full colour makes this a very easy reference to use, even under extreme conditions. It is part of the Companion series of cockpit guides. Every page is laminated for water resistance and the spiral binding includes a hanging loop. This results in a very durable publication, although it will be regularly updated and most power boaters will want to keep up with the latest information

William Fife – Master of the Classic Yacht

B0147

Those who are deterred by the £45 price tag will miss a real treat. The Italian yachting photographer Franco Pace has included 19 of the surviving Fife yachts ranging in size from the 108ft Altair through to the 27ft Yvette. Franco has provided a specification together with a brief history of each featured yacht to accompany his wonderful photographs. Although this is principally a photographic book it is not the type of book to be simply flicked through. You will want plenty of time to take in the detail of these photographs some of which have been reproduced over a double spread. Franco’s breathtaking sailing shots have been balanced with superb detail shots taken both on deck and down below.

Why Secret Intelligence Fails

B1337

Michael Turner is an experienced intelligence specialist with considerable experience from the American perspective. The book reviews the reasons and effects of intelligence failures that will be of interest to intelligence professionals but is written in a jargon-free style that even a reader coming fresh to the subject will find entertaining, engaging and informative. Even within the intelligence community the whole subject of classification and sensitivity is confusing and creates debate. Information which should be available to citizens is frequently buried as classified material and other information that should be available only on a need-to-know enters the public domain. Where information is strongly protected, the potential enemy gains access but the citizen who funds the gathering and analysis of intelligence is unable to read it. There are many cases where this confusion over classification is used to hide failures and leads to lessons not being learned. The primary motivation for the author may well be the serious intelligence failures that led to the US-led invasion of a sovereign power. If this was the primary motivation, the treatment of the subject is oblique. The author has set out in a very easy to understand manner a catalogue of intelligence failures down the years and sets out some of the remedies that could be employed to avoid repeats of these failures. What he has not covered, probably because the information was not available to him at the time of writing, are the very special factors that applied to intelligence on Iraqi threats. Since the tragic death of Dr David Kelly, the story has been emerging of how the Blair regime published propaganda masquerading as intelligence reports and summaries that were designed to mislead the British Parliament, the British people, the US President, and the US people.
