Mutiny

B1400

It is the forth book in Stockwin’s developing story of two principal characters, Kydd and Renzi. It marks the beginning of a major change but continues in the attractive formula of a book that is full of surprises and twists of fortune. After their epic open boat voyage across the Caribbean, our two heroes have reached the height of a career as sailors. They have been rewarded with Admiralty Warrants. The Warrant Officer in the Royal Navy was a very important role that began to change only after 1945. Until the end of World War Two, the “thin ringer” was not uncommon, often a Senior Commissioned Gunner. At the time of Kydd, the Admiralty Warrant Officer Officer was most commonly a master or master’s mate

Seaflower

B1395

This third book in the Kydd and Renzi series of tales sees the principal characters developing nicely. We also see the Stockwin style confirmed. In some ways his books are a collection of related short stories, allowing a much greater freedom to explore the many facets of life in the Royal Navy. This book begins with a period of frustration and uncertainty. The Artemis survivors are confined to a hulk, awaiting the convening of a court martial for the loss of Artemis. The pace soon picks up. With mysterious haste they are put aboard HMS Trajan, a 74 Gun line of battle ship, bound for the West Indies

Guns in Colour

B1388

This is a photo-essay with some excellent full colour photographs and concise text. It will particularly appeal to collectors and is typical of a number of books published in the 1970s and 1980s to take advantage of new lower cost printing techniques for full colour reproduction that introduced art quality images at a very affordable price

The Royal Gunroom at Sandringham

B1387

This is a collector’s book, as denoted by its issue price in 1989. Although there are many fine quality full colour photographs that have never before been published, there is detailed and engaging text to describe this unique gun collection. This work has only been possible with the unusual co-operation and access provided by Her Majesty The Queen. The collection is not only unique but historically important and virtually unknown outside a small circle. The book is not a comprehensive catalogue of this collection held in the Gunroom at Sandringham. Some seventy five guns have been chosen for their technical qualities, fine decoration or historical associations. To be expected of any collection at a country house that is the centre of a large estate with land dedicated to field sports, there are fine examples of the hand made shotgun produced to special order and tailored exactly to the owner and his or her requirements. What may surprise some is the extent of the collection to include pistols, rifles and military guns, a number in specially commissioned decorated finish. One example is the gift from the US Army, presented by Lt General Jacob L Devers

Pistols and Revolvers

B1386

This is an illustrated encyclopedia covering more than 450 years of development of pistols and revolvers. Each weapon covered features a full colour photograph of an example, a specification and a description. The handguns covered are almost exclusively single or double action guns that are single shot, revolving or self loading. The exception is the Heckler and Koch VP-70 which has a burst fire option when the shoulder stock is attached. Several models covered are capable of automatic fire as a selected option or inadvertently as a result of slide locking defects

Guns and Gun Collecting

B1389

Octopus published a number of books on guns and gun collecting during the 1970s and 1980s that achieved a new standard in the quality of the illustrations taking advantage of new printing and reproduction processes. This large format book was aimed at serious collectors and those developing an interest in collecting. Where colour photographs were available these have been reproduced in high definition full colour through the book where previously full colour had been used very sparingly by publishers and for colour plate sections. This has allowed the beauty of the craft of gun making to be presented with some stunning images of highly decorated guns that were intended to be used but which were also works of art. There are more than 180 illustrations and all are executed in high definition

Small Arms of the World

B1383

WHB Smith was an internationally acknowledged specialist in small arms of all types. During World War Two he was the principle source of new foreign small arms patterns for the US military and intelligence agencies. Using an informal network of contacts, he was able to obtain examples of new types of small arms at an early stage from virtually any country in the world. He also wrote a series of manuals for US Federal Agencies based on his direct experience of firing and stripping weapons. In several cases he produced more detailed and accurate manuals than the originals produced by a firearms manufacturer. Based on these manuals, WHB Smith began to write a book that brought together this information in a single volume and then expanded on the core information, tracking the development of firearms since the previous edition

System Restore

As essential engineering work completes, we are rebuilding the information posted from November 23.

The first portal to be restored will be http://ftnews.firetrench.com which carries synopsis news for this and other FIRE Project Portals. This will enable us to bring the FIRE News Portal up to dater and then to carry new breaking news.

During the next few days we will be checking each portal in turn and restoring information that was posted from November 23. We thank readers for their patience and are hoping to have fully restored all FIRE Project systems by the end of the week.
